Back to the Future!

February 2, 2010

first-applemacCroydon Music has endeavoured to keep you up to date with the changes in the industry and what to look forward to, we have looked at areas such as new ways to deliver your music to the world as well as trying to dispel some of the myths such as Facebook and Myspace can make you a star!

So as we know most of the changes are provoked by the world online but not all. We have had the world music fair MIDEM just finished in Cannes France, the word is that the music industry isn’t dying a death and people seem to be looking forward with excitement and not fear as the media would have you believe.

Companies such as Shazam the song recognition tool are reporting 300,000 song downloads a day through their service alone which bodes well for an industry being ripped apart by filesharing.

ipadWith the world cooing over the release of the iPad (or the iTouch for giants as I like to call it), one of the key components of these successful feats of technology The App is one area the industry is betting on.

Just as websites were seen as shop fronts in your home through computers apps are seen as mobile shop fronts that are carried around with you 24/7, what better shop can you have?

Many companies are developing new music related apps to promote their artists such as the soon to be released iPhone app for Hip Hop super producer and artist Dr Dre, and games using music from current popular artists such as the forth coming Riddim Ribbon using the music of the Black Eyed Peas.

Now the point of writing this article is not just to give you something interesting to talk about at Starbucks but it is to get you thinking about partnerships with related industries. You may think these developments are far beyond your reach but you would be wrong, the key is for you to develop a reputable music based product and seek partnerships in other industries. NERD front man Pharrell Williams was asked if was to start again in this industry how would he do it with the knowledge he has now, rather than he giving some new way to find a recording contract he stated he would just put together a website for his music and then get a team to bug the hell out of advertisers, I’m sure Moby would testify to that.
