Former Brit School student and X Factor winner Leona Lewis is the first British woman to top the US charts for over 20 years.
Not since Kim Wilde in 1987 with the cover version of the Supremes hit “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” has a British female got to No.1 on the US billboard charts. Lewis is also the third UK female to to hit the top spot with their debut hit, the others being Petula Clark in 1965 with the song Downtown, while Sheena Easton’s Morning Train followed in 1981.
As you can imagine the Brit School favourite is said to be estatic Lewis wrote on her website that it was her “dream” to break America.”Its been a dream of mine since I was a little girl and I can’t wait.”
It seems that the singers appearance on talk show queen Oprah Winfrey show was a key factor in the promotion of the single with download and mobile phone sales soaring after Lewis appeared with mentor Simon Cowell.
Simon Cowell, has seemed to have made Lewis his main priority, said: “We’ll do everything in our power to make her an international star.”
Lewis has been labelled the new Whitney Houston and has signed a $5 million recording contract withthe man who discovered her mogul Clive Davis.
