The Web isn’t the Answer!
February 1, 2010
What is this you say!! Of course it is, it is the answer to all independent musicians prayers. You can get your music to the world and all the labels around the world from your bedroom!
I have spoken to many people including online specialists and they all come to the same conclusion, while the internet helps with communication and finding information on the industry insiders you need to get your product to & with the countless online music tools & promotion tools if you aren’t a good artist or band the internet isn’t going to make you one!!
If you are lazy or not very motivated, the internet isn’t a magic pill to solve all your worries, it’s just a tool for you to use and those who work hard and learn how to use the internet (most probably the same people who would have worked hard on an offline campaign) will benefit from its many blessings.
There have been many developments in so many different areas on the web from marketing to video toMP3 to blogs to Vlogs that you could get consumed, I guess that’s why they call it the web because you are a fly that gets stuck and eventually live and die in the many pages and pleasures offered online. The truth is that while it has put a huge spanner in the works of recording industry bigwigs and has and continues to affect the future of music consumption it hasn’t changed the way an act is developed and put together, only the way it is delivered.
So if you are considering becoming an independent operator in this industry, think about what you want to deliver first before you think about the delivery method. The product is all important in this equation if you haven’t got that stage correct then the rest is futile as they say. There are always a few people in the world you may happen to find that may like the same bad quality dross you may have produced but think, “If I’ve found a hundred people that like bad quality stuff think of how many more that will love it when I take just a little more time to clean it up and make it perfect.”
Don’t get me wrong I am not advocating not taking the internet seriously, just realise what it is and learn how to use it effectively as a part of a all-round strategy, that doesn’t mean spending your days on Facebook and wonder why sales of your album isn’t shooting through the roof.
